“Lucas? Sidney?”

They didn’t answer, but someone laughed nearby, draining some of the tension from him. He quickly finished pissing and tucked his dick away.

“Aye, Lucas! Did you see the creature move yet?” he teased, striding in the direction he’d heard his friends.

For a brief moment, guilt pricked him, flashing an image of Daisy’s betrayed expression, blood trickling down her arm, but he shoved it aside.

It was barely a scratch, and clearly the stories were lies.

There was nothing—He froze, the hairs on his nape rising.

Behind him, stalks rustled, his heart tripping in his chest.

The fuck?

Wasn’t that thing’s post south of his current position?

Swallowing back a whimper—he would not call out, dammit!—he increased his speed, listening for steps behind him.

More rustling came, fear swimming in his veins.

He didn’t think, switching from a brisk walk to a full-out sprint.

When the movements behind him drew closer, he released a scream.

It could be his buddies, but he didn’t think they were behind him.

No taunts or jeers filled the air, just his panicked breathing, the thunk of stalks getting shoved aside, and the crunch of feet moving through the field.

Two sets of feet.

No, no, no, no.

I will not die tonight!

“Connor!”

His friends!

He opened his mouth but never got to scream before the ground fell away as something snatched him off his feet.

He glanced up—up into the face of death, needle-sharp teeth gleaming down at him in a sinister grin.
