WIP Excerpt #3

There are authors who are very good at sticking to the first rule of Henry Miller’s writing routine, namely “Work on one thing at a time until finished” but I’m not one of them. I’m more of the “100 open browsers in my head” type of author. Besides the few WIPs, I have some ideas that are pestering me non-stop. While I’m resisting the latter for the moment, it’s sometimes hard to decide which of the WIPs to turn my attention to when I sit at the computer.

The silence grew awkward. We were passing through the park, which by this time was filled with people. It was Sunday noon and probably one of the last warm days of autumn so everyone wanted to take advantage of it. I turned to Mike to comment and get us back to a common talking ground when I noticed he was nervous. This rarely happened to him and reminded me so much of the last time I saw him like this that the piss off mechanism inside me clicked.

“Is there someone who might cause trouble if they see us together?”

He turned to me, so calm, so reconciled that I suddenly wanted to kick something. He noticed my darkened mood and tried to liven up the situation.

“I guess not, unless you do anything inappropriate.”

“What do you mean by inappropriate? Christ, Mike, do you think I’m going to jump you and tear off your clothes in the middle of the fucking park?”

Mike shook his head with a smile, “I hope not.”

“You hope I won’t jump on you and tear off your clothes or that I won’t do it in the middle of the park?” My head to mouth filter was clearly having an off day today. I saw it in the widened blue eyes, rimmed with the darkest lashes I’ve seen.
